Every Postpartum Journey Matters
The Fourth Trimester: The Trimester in the Shadows
A few weeks ago, as I was preparing to write my post about celebrating your postpartum body, I had the distinct honor of chatting with some amazing mamas about their postpartum experiences. These stories were so powerful to read and they left me in tears each time. Each story was different, but there was a common theme of at least some part of the postpartum experience being unexpected and a little (or more than a little) tough to get through.
Here’s what I started thinking about the raw, vulnerable, roller coaster of a time that is being newly postpartum. It is a time when mamas need the MOST support, but it’s often a time when we feel like we should close ourselves off to others. Maybe it’s because we want to prove we can do it ourselves, maybe it’s because we feel ashamed of the way we are feeling, maybe it’s because we don’t realize that somewhere out there, there is most definitely a mama who has experienced something similar.
Whatever the reason, I think it’s time that we start sharing more openly about our fourth trimester experiences. (Side note: I didn’t even know the “fourth trimester” was a thing until I was deep into it and feeling like a total failure of a mother…)
