Why Personal Growth Books?

I won’t lie. I used to think “self help” books were for people whose lives were falling apart. Definitely wasn’t going to be needing any of that, thank you very much! Then, a great friend of mine (@jeslynfitness – go follow her now!!! She’ll motivate the hell out of you!!) sent me a copy of The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy and it seriously changed my life. The book is based on the principle that every day the tiny actions you take are compounding and can lead you to the life of your dreams. It was a total game changer for me and I became hooked on the world of personal growth books.

With the new year fast approaching, I know everyone will be thinking about how to be a better person in 2019. And while I don’t love the concept of resolutions (you can read about why in my post about how to stay healthy during the holidays), I freaking love the idea of people wanting to better themselves. I would argue that personal development books and podcasts are THE  BEST WAY to make those resolutions you’re creating actually stick.

12 Personal Growth Books for 2019

1. Girl Was Your Face by Rachel Hollis

Ok, if you haven’t heard of this book, you may have been living under a rock this year. Rachel Hollis pretty much exploded onto the personal development scene and everything she creates is pretty much magic. Girl Wash Your Face my just be my all-time favorite personal growth book. It’s funny, real, no-nonsense, and completely inspiring. She structures the book as 20 lies we tell ourselves and let me tell you, every single one hit home for me. It’s a MUST READ.

2. High Performance Habits by Brendon Burchard

A researcher and one of the world’s most successful high performance coaches, Brendon Burchard has put together these six habits that are the most effective for reaching long-term success. I seriously could not take notes fast enough while I was reading High Performance Habits, and at this point, I think I’ve read it three times. It’s full of research, real-life examples and TONS of tips and techniques that you can apply to your life immediately.

3. Daring Greatly by Brene Brown

Ok, I know I keep saying everything is my favorite, but Brene Brown is MY HERO. The way she writes is so raw and honest and she speaks straight to your heart. Daring Greatly is all about battling shame and embracing vulnerability in order to step into our most courageous and joyful self. Get your tissues for while you read this one, I seriously cried like 15 times while reading it.


4. You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero

This was the second personal growth book I ever read and it will always be one of my favorites. You Are a Badass is HILARIOUS, y’all. Like, laugh out loud on the subway, people looking at me like I’m crazy hilarious. At the same time, it is so freaking life changing. I’ve read this one at least four times and my copy is so well-worn with folded down corners and notes everywhere. This book was the first one that got me to realized HELLO, girl – you are in charge of your own thoughts and feelings, and those thoughts and feelings are going to drive your destiny.

5. You Are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero

Oh man guys, I have had a ROUGH relationship with money in my life. I’ve dealt with (and am still struggling with) so many fears and limiting beliefs surrounding money, and You Are a Badass at Making Money has been a lifeline for me. It’s just as hilarious as her first book and has been so helpful for me to recognize my limiting beliefs about money and start to remove the obstacles I’ve put in my own way when it comes to achieving financial freedom and abundance.

6. Present Over Perfect by Shauna Niequist

I ready this book when I was pregnant with Lucy and it could not have come into my life at amore perfect time. If you are a people pleaser like me, you need Present Over Perfect. Shauna takes us through her journey of leaving behind the pressure to be “perfect” and how she started to enjoy the messiness and ordinariness of life by simply being present. Reading this felt like a massive sigh of relief as I prepared to be a mother for the first time. 

7. Crushing It by Gary Vaynerchuk

I had the opportunity to see Gary Vaynerchuk speak at an event and he BROUGHT THE FIRE, y’all. He completely changed my mindset about what it means to work hard for what you want. If you are an entrepreneur or are creating a personal brand, Crushing It is an absolute must read! The book is full of relevant information for all social media platforms with tons of real life examles to draw inspiration from.

8. The Universe Has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein

Even before I started reading personal growth books, I would always say to my husband, Eric, “I have faith in the universe, and the universe has faith in me.” This was usually when he was doing something like reminding me to lock my car doors for the hundredth time and I would shrug it off because I always optimistically believe the best in people. Like You Are a Badass at Making Money, The Universe Has Your Back is all about releasing the things that are blocking you from the life of your dreams and trusting that the universe is bringing those dreams to you.

9. The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte

I freaking love, love, love The Desire Map. This book was another one that came with perfect timing. I was feeling totally burnt out and exhausted when I found it and it completely shifted my mindset. It focuses on helping your figure out how you want to feel and how to create goals that will help you feel that way.

 
 

10. Mastering Your Mean Girl by Melissa Ambrosini

We all have that little voice in our heads, right? The one that when you come up with a great idea, says “that’s stupid,” or “you’ll never pull that off.” Well, Mastering Your Mean Girl is all about telling that voice to sit down and shut up! It’s an amazing, honest, and raw guidebook to help you find your inner confidence and truly love yourself. Another one that I’ve come back to multiple times!

11. Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

I fell in love with Elizabeth Gilbert when I read Eat, Pray, Love and decided, along with the rest of her readers, that traveling to Italy, India and Bali was definitely part of my life plan, too. So when Big Magic came out, I was so freaking excited and guys, it did not disappoint! I’ve always felt like I wasn’t a very creative person, even though as a music teacher I was making my entire livelihood through being creative, and this book totally challenged the preconceived notions about creativity.
 

12. How to Get Sh*t Done by Erin Falconer

As soon as I saw the title, I knew I just had to read How to Get Sh*t Done. The subtitle on this book is: “When Women Need to Stop Doing Everything So They Can Achieve Anything.” So basically, this book was totally written for me, and I’m guessing for you, too! It teaches you how to focus on three areas where you want to excel and then delegate, outsource, or just stop freaking caring about the rest. Can I get an AMEN.

  1. Love these recommendations!! I’ve read many of them and agree 100% with how they have helped my mindset in a positive way. I am so excited for “Girl, Stop Apologizing” and another one by Jen Sincero… whaaaaat??!
